We left West Yellowstone and went up to Bozeman, MT and caught the freeway east to Sheridan. What a beautiful drive. It was a perfect day and we passed through some beautiful canyons and flatlands. We spent a week in Sheridan and mostly enjoyed it….when the weather cooperated. I say that because our second evening there, we saw black clouds approaching from the west and before we knew it, the wind picked up and we thought we would take flight. The new slide-out covers we had put on Birdie acted like sails and caught the wind and jerked the unit back and forth until we didn’t know if we would make it. Then….it started to hail and we then thought we would get pounded into the ground. The new slide-out covers survived fine but we weren’t sure if we would. The noise inside the RV was deafening; so loud we couldn’t hear each other even when we yelled. It went on and on, then just like flipping a switch, it stopped. Here are some pictures.
As soon as it stopped I took some pictures out of our door.
Some hailstones were as big as a nickel. We didn’t find any damage but it sure had us worried while it lasted.
After the hailstorm we had a nice day then another storm moved in with WIND. Now that was really fun, too. We had gusts up to 60 mph and thought we would get blown away, really far this time, like maybe end up in Kansas. It blew for two days. Birdie’s sails (aka slide-out covers) caught every gust and the unit would jerk until we began to feel seasick. We drew in the slide-outs on the side that caught the wind and had some relief from the buffeting until we tried to go to bed. The bedroom slide-out was on the side caught be the wind. We tried to go to sleep but not only did the sails catch the wind and jerk the unit from side to side, they also snapped and flapped and knocked against the top of the slide-out (right above our heads) and made so much noise neither one of us could sleep. We finally had to get out of bed and draw in the bedroom slide-out then go back to bed. It was awkward getting in and out…Bob had to crawl over my feet…but the bathroom was useable. We were then able to go to sleep, in spite of the rocking and rolling. It wasn’t until evening of the second day that the fierce wind began to die down and the next morning the sun was shining and it was a beautiful day. The rest of our time in Sheridan was very enjoyable.
Sheridan seems to be the city of sculptures. Along the main section of the business district there are sculptures, sometimes 2 or 3, on each corner. I took pictures of some of them but none of the pictures turned out too well. But, anyway, here they are.
This one is in front of the Old Inn which was built by Buffalo Bill Cody. There is a large room inside that doubled as a dining room/ballroom. This is on a wagon wheel and it turns around.
This is a fountain called “Cool Water”. The water trickles out of his hat and he is trying to take a drink.
I love this one. A little kid in an oversized cowboy hat with his rope and his dog. He is getting ready to lasso the rooster. The rooster (middle) has his neck cocked like he’s saying “go ahead, make my day” and the dog looks very worried like he is ready to turn tail and run any second because he knows what is about to happen.
This one is in front of the library and it’s of a bookworm. Reminds me of Maddie. Enlarge it to see the detail.
Notice that all of the sculptures so far have been in keeping with a small western town; cowboys, Indians, nature, historical events. But this one???? In Sheridan, Wyoming?????
Go figure.
Old Sheridan Train Depot with an old train on display.
The old inn. It’s now closed so we couldn’t take a tour.
And last but not least…..
The local beauty parlor. Don’t ya just love small town humor?
