We took this carriage ride on the 4th of July before the Nauvoo Pageant started and before there were huge crowds trying to see and do everything. We didn’t plan it that way. Once again, dumb luck was on our side. The carriage ride is different from the wagon ride in that it takes us out into the rural area around Nauvoo, not into the restored old city. Here are the pictures we took during the carriage ride.
Once again, beautiful horses
We went through several wooded areas where it was very cool on a hot day. Many species of birds, lots of squirrels and just plain peaceful
We saw this young deer grazing in someone’s yard
They took us to an overlook of the Mississippi
When the pioneers first came to Nauvoo, it was a very swampy area. They thought at first that it was because of the River but soon found out the water was coming from two springs. They diverted one to the south and this one was diverted to the north. Look down the culvert and see the limestone layers that run all through this area for miles. This limestone also keeps the water from percolating down through the soil and away. We saw this limestone along roads and streams and anywhere there was a bare cliff face. Most everything in the more out of the way places is paved with limestone gravel. Even here where our RV is parked, the pad is made of limestone gravel, and very course gravel at that.
