The day after the anniversary of the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum, we drove over to Carthage where it all took place. There is a very nice visitors center there and a memorial garden. The guide who took us through the jail said it was a good thing we didn’t come on the 27th because they had more than 1,500 visitors that day. They had to leave things out of the tours to cut them shorter so they could get everyone through. So when we heard that, we were happy we hadn’t gone on the 27th, too. Here are some of the pictures we took in Carthage.
From the parking lot, we walked through the memorial garden

Artwork in the visitors center. Above is “The Prophet's Last Ride”
We thought this was a really interesting plant with the purple and green. It looked like someone had painted it on.
After we left the jail, we drove around Carthage a bit and took some pictures of the city.
This is the Hancock County Courthouse built around the early 1900’s
Around the courthouse is a square were the main business district is located. We thought it was a cute little hometown America scene.
