HISTORIC NAUVOO VISITORS CENTER

The Visitors Center for the LDS Church is really beautiful, inside and out.  They have many displays and open areas with comfortable seating inside.  Outside is done with beautiful gardens, seating, sculptures and displays.  Here are a few pictures we took at the Visitors Center.

Original Sun Stone from the Nauvoo Temple.  Only three in existence.  Besides this one, the Community of Christ Church has one in their visitors center and we saw one in the Smithsonian in Washington, DC when we were there.

As part of the gardens around the Visitors Center is a Tribute to Women which will be a different post.  The Visitors Center is so wonderfully cool, especially on a hot humid day so we went in there often when we were close.  They show videos in one theater and do musical productions in another theater.  We saw “Remembering Nauvoo” and “Joseph Smith—Profit of the Restoration”, both beautiful, informative videos.  We also saw “High Hopes and Riverboats” which is a stage production put on by the Young Performing Missionaries.  This production has lots of energy, fun plot and some beautiful music.  We enjoyed it very much.

YOUNG PERFORMING MISSIONARIES

As an explanation, maybe because I didn’t know this.  The young performing missionaries are young adults who have to audition for this mission.  They have to be able to sing, dance, act, and play (probably more than one) musical instruments.  They are called as missionaries for three and a half months.  They number 24 and have been here in Nauvoo since last April and will be here until the latter part of August.  They are in several different productions which are done daily.  These kids do up to seven shows a day, all done in period clothing, in the heat and humidity in outdoor theaters, as well as inside theaters with AC.  Always with a high level of energy and big smiles on their faces.
